Presentations to Schools, Organizations, and 200+ youth island-wide…
We continue to make an effort for skin cancer awareness!
We have delivered skin cancer education to a wide range of audiences across Maui, emphasizing impactfulness in every presentation. Our outreach has included students, faculty, and clubs at Maui High, as well as programs at Maui Waena Intermediate and Baldwin High School.
Impactfulness in these presentations is achieved by:
Audience-specific messaging: We tailor content to the developmental level and interests of each group—age-appropriate visuals and activities for intermediate students, practical workplace and lifestyle risk information for high school students and faculty, and club-focused sessions that integrate group goals (e.g., athletics, environmental clubs).
Clear, memorable takeaways: Each session highlights three to five actionable behaviors (daily sunscreen use, reapplication guidelines, protective clothing, shade strategies, and regular skin checks) and provides concise reasons why these behaviors reduce risk.
Local relevance: We connect sun-safety guidance to Maui’s climate, outdoor lifestyle, and cultural practices, showing how small daily changes can protect skin while preserving the island lifestyle.
Interactive learning: Presentations include demonstrations (proper sunscreen application, how to perform self-exams), Q&A, and scenario-based discussions to reinforce retention and encourage behavior change.
Visual and tactile aids: Use of before-and-after imagery, UV camera demonstrations when available, and samples of protective clothing and sunscreen brands to make risks and prevention tangible.
Faculty and peer engagement: Training for teachers and student leaders to model and reinforce sun-safe norms on campus—helping embed behaviors into school routines and extracurricular activities.
Data and storytelling: Combining local statistics, clinical facts, and personal stories to make the health consequences and benefits of prevention emotionally resonant without being alarmist.
These elements have resulted in measurable shifts in awareness and intent among participants, stronger institutional support for sun-safe policies at schools, and increased student-led initiatives promoting regular sunscreen use and shade-seeking behaviors across campus communities.
